Canon lens stopping 70D camera.

I recently purchased a Canon EFS 18-55mm IS lens, for my Canon 70D camera.
Admittedly it was cheap, because the seller said AF was intermittent .
I cleaned the lens terminals, and it appeared to work - but only if I used MF to deliberately blur the subject.
Then AF worked, and focus was sharp. After about thirty minutes of trial and error, I decided to forget AF.
Then, however the shutter wouldn't fire until I removed the lens. As my other Canon lenses worked satisfactorily,
I realised this "new" lens was certainly faulty, but I am prepared to use it in MF mode only, as I'm not up to stripping the lens,
Paying for a repair would be more costly than purchasing another lens at a reasonable price.
As anyone experienced this before, and solved it?
